Colors of the Turanian Horse
And its Descendants:
Roan and Rabicano
![]()
Roans are no longer listed as found in the Akhal-Teke, but roan, mostly as red roan, does occur in the Iranian Turkoman strains. The photo at left shows a Jargalan mare who is either a roan on chestnut or on claybank or red dun.
Rabicano refers to a type of roaning which is typically confined to the flanks, but which may sometimes extend over the stomach and barrel and very occasionally onto the hindquarters; there is also a tendency toward a "skunk tail" (white at the base of the tail, considered a sign of speed in the English Thoroughbred). This type of marking is usually not noted in studbooks, but is widely found in the Akhal-Teke. The mare in the photo above also shows this a small bit of rabicano on the flap of skin right in front of the stifle.
