Colors of the Turanian Horse

And its Descendants:

Dilute Duns

Perhaps the most common coloration of the Akhal-Teke, second only to Bay, is the "Dilute Dun", which is a horse who carries and shows both Dun and a single dose of Cremello. Such horses look palomino or buckskin but have a faint but clear backstripe, and sometimes leg barring. On buckskin/dun combinations, the points may be lightened to brown rather than black, and the mane may be two-toned, like that of the Norwegian Fjord Horse. MV Kazam at right is a typical example. However, in most horses of this coloration, the manes and tails are uniformly dark.

While there is often a faint darkening on the spine, or even a very faint stripe on the back, of many horses, the stripe on the Dilute Dun is, while not dark, crisp, wide and obvious, and is diagnostic of a basically Dun horse. The Lineback Palomino whose back is featured at left, MV Mazan, is the sire of the well-striped dun filly on the Dun page, as well as of MV Kazam, who, in addition to a similar stripe on his spine also shows a good deal of barring on his legs.

Dilute Claybank Duns, as well as "linebacked Perlinos" and "linebacked Cremellos" also occur, although in the latter two instances, the line on the back may be nearly invisible.

The offspring of Dilute Duns can be almost any color within certain limits.

When both parents are the most typical form of Dilute Dun,

the offspring will tend to be, in roughly descending order of probability of occurrence:

Dilute Dun____Perlino/Cremello_______Bay________Dun

Linebacked Palomino__Palomino___Buckskin___Chesnut

Other colors, such as Grulla, Silver Dun, Silver Buckskin, Smoky, Claybank Dun, Black, Seal Brown and the Sooty range of colors will also appear on rare occasion.
