Raven Black, Coal Black
![]()
There are two types of Black commonly found in the Turanian Horse and its descendants:
The genetic "switch" for Raven Black is part of the set of switches which determines whether a horse will be able to produce black pigment in its hairs. Raven Black overrides colors determined by the set of switches which determines whether a horse will be Bay or Black. Because Raven Black is dominant, breeding two Ravens together does not guarantee Raven offspring. Raven Black horses are almost always genuinely black.
Coal Black arises from the set of switches which determine whether a horse will have black pigment restricted to the points (Bay) or extended all over the body (Coal Black). Coal Black is recessive, and the horses are often more of a deep Sable color than a true blue-black.
The glow factor on a black produces a coloration that Jonathan Maslow called "Electric Black," a very apt description. This coloring is so unlike the normal shade of black one sees on horses that the Russians have a special name for it, voronaya,
